iMovie Compression Settings

Versions of iMovie prior to iLife6 used mpeg4 as the default compression. iLife6 brought in H.264 codecs which make high quality video... but they take a long time to export. Speed or quality? For classroom assignments, speed is sometimes more important.

So to get mpeg4 compression speed, follow the steps below to change back to mpeg4 from H.264, and take back yourLife from iLife!

From within iMovie go to File | Export and the following window is opened. Select the QuickTime Tab at the top.
From the pull down menu "Compress movie for:" select "Expert Settings" and click "Share. "
Make sure the file name and the destination are correct. Export should already be set to "Movie to QuickTime Movie" as in the image. Click the "Options" button
Click the Video "Settings..." button
From the pull down menu "Compression Type:" select "MPEG-4Video"
From the pull down menu "Frame Rate:" select 15 fps, then click "OK" button
Now click on the size button and select "320x240 QVGA" from the pull down menu. Also,
Click the check box next to "Preserve aspect ratio using:" Also, make sure that "Letterbox" is selected in the pull down menu to the right of "Preserve aspect ratio using:"
From the pull down menu "Prepare for Internet Streaming" select Fast Start, then click "OK" button
Compression should start and put the file into the location you specified above!
